I noticed that cropping an image from the Gallery app creates a new image and moves it to the front as if it's the latest photograph, and the new (cropped) image does not appear in the Camera app.

When the image is capture with Remove EXIF data after capture disabled, the image is overwritten as expected instead of a new image being created and marked as most recent.

Like most privacy-minded users, I wouldn't like to let identifiable EXIF metadata to remain in my images which I upload. Is there a workaround for the time being? Or a way to correctly mark the recency of an image? Hopefully a fix can be released but I'll wait for others to weigh in.

i am pretty certain that the gallery app is AOSP and as such would have to be changed upstream. there may be another gallery available that addresses that issue. or use of EXIF eraser, though that is a bit of added work.

itsjpb The image doesn't appear in the Camera app. It also only happens when enabling stripping EXIF metadata in Camera.

It's not exclusive to Gallery as I just replicated this behaviour with the Markup editor.

yore you'll have to forgive me, i'm a bit sloe to follow what you mean. as i see it you are describing three scenarios:

        1. take a photo with gos camera. exif erase is enabled. everything is as expected.

          • metadata removed
          • image appears in camera's gallery preview
        2. take a photo with gos camera. exif erase is disabled. edit image in external app. everything as expected.

          • replaces original photo
          • metadata still present
          • edited image appears in camera's gallery preview
        3. take a photo with gos camera. exif erase is enabled. edit image in external app. things are different.

          • old image deleted gone, new image jumps to front of library
          • edited image does not appear in camera's gallery preview
          • exif data changes (the primary concern)

is this an accurate summation of what's occurring? am i missing or adding anything? if i'm right, what exif data specifically is changed? i believe i've been able to replicate but want to confirm i'm on the right track.

itsjpb You're on the right track.

          Except that

itsjpb old image deleted gone, new image jumps to front of library

Old image stays, new image doesn't match the original photo's recency, so it pops up as the most recent photo.

itsjpb edited image does not appear in camera's gallery preview

          Correct.

itsjpb exif data changes (the primary concern)

I'm not particularly concerned about EXIF metadata, although it's something worth noting now that you mentioned it. My main concern is that I avoid editing images since the recency is inaccurate with the edited photo and doesn't appear in the Camera app, making finding photos really difficult. Although I wonder if changing the image name from Files would have an effect considering images are named by date and time?
