Feature request: enhanced video recording, especially while phone being locked

With the stock video recording, there's no possible way to lock the phone and keep recording, nor does there a way to transmit/upload the video file(encrypted, of course) for a desired server of choice.

This feature is absolutely must, the same way as there's auto-reboot(https://grapheneos.org/features#auto-reboot). It provides a must have security.

It should be developed with priority to save the video-file on the device instead of uploading it to the server of choice, for obvious reasons.
Nothing stopping to both, but as I said, with priority to save on disk.

A Github issue was made in September.

I haven't used it so I can't attest to it being good or not, but you could look into the app FadCam instead. Its actually made by a member on the forum.

mike_vo Videos can be recorded while the screen is locked by starting the camera while locked. Normal camera apps stop recording when the app is no longer in the foreground. It would be possible to offer a generic background recording feature via running a foreground service. That would be a major new feature for the app and would need to be an opt-in option for video recording rather than the default behavior. It can be requested as a new feature at https://github.com/GrapheneOS/Camera/issues.

So devs are aware of this and not interested in implementing it or is there some technical issues with implementing it?

Thanks for pointing this out, but I think trusting 3rd party software as this one is at the very least questionable. Even if the creator is a member of this forum.

It's quite essential it would be part of the GOS itself, same with the recording calls, for example. No one in right mind would trust this kind of things for some questionable 3rd party app.

It might look like my tone is a bit demanding and GOS devs own me something, but this is a friendly request and quite reasonable, as I see, and will provide more security and benefits than otherwise.

mike_vo i understand your concerns about 3rd party apps being risky, but the app i made FadCam is fully open source and no closed-source libraries are used in it, nor the app connects to internet. You can examine the code yourself as its on GitHub, the app don't even collect any crash data or analytics so you can try it if it works for you. For reference, the app is also featured on HowToMen youtube channel (https://youtu.be/gU9ddvtqL3E?si=txQ7nh-UKLzsNGyP) and several other places.

Two replies with inappropriate discussion of one of the GrapheneOS developers have been removed. The appropriate way to request a feature is through the issue tracker. No one should be trying to contact individual developers to request a feature or try to get them to prioritize implementing a feature. Please discuss this on the issue tracker and respect the decisions that are made about which features will be implemented and their prioritization.
