Installing Phone too Phone

Hi,

I currently find myself with no laptop, and have got a new Pixel 7a that I want to run GOS in. I have done the web and cli many times from Windows and Linux, but never from phone to phone. I'm currently using someone's Pixel 6a running the latest updated Android to do the installation onto my 7a(I've tried Chrome and Edge). I've tried multiple cables and nothing. I get an error message on the GrapheneOS page saying 'no device detected' and a popup 'no compatible device connected'. Just nothing, like it's not even finding the device. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated 👍 I really don't want to be stuck with Google!

Mat888 Don't plug the two phones together until the Pixel 7a is already in the bootloader interface with OEM unlocking enabled, and the web installer is open in Chrome on the Pixel 6a. Once you're there, then plug the two phones together and try again to tap the unlock bootloader button.

Are you following the installation guide step-by-step? You need to boot your device into the bootloader interface before connecting anything.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I'm only connecting after I'm on the web installer page and the 7a is in the bootloader interface. I'm still getting this:

Does the USB port on the phone running the installer work in a general sense? For example, does plugging in a USB flash drive, or keyboard, or mouse work?

Which cables have been tried so far? The quality of the cable used matters a lot. Personally I recommend Best Buy, Cable Matters, Belkin, and Anker. That's aside from an original Google cable, which is the top recommendation. You want something from a reputable manufacturer, with a good speed rating, and honestly it should probably have a pretty good power rating too -- that's not actually necessary, but it tends to correlate with higher quality.

de0u I've tried plugging a LaCie Rugged into both phones and it works fine. I have three cables - two official Pixel cables that came with phones and one Samsung.

What are your USB settings set to in the browser and on the device?

ErnestThornhill The 6a is set to 'Ask first' in Site Settings and both phones are set to File Transfer/Android auto in Default USB configuration.

Those are developer options? What are the non-developer USB port options?

I'm not sure how to help you. I don't have a stock device handy.

On GrapheneOS, "USB default configuration" is a developer option, and I am concerned it was mentioned, because in general developer options get in the way of normal functioning, and it seems as if something is getting in the way of normal USB functioning.

Also, on GrapheneOS the options under "USB preferences" are not the same as the options under "USB default configuration" in developer options.

The good news is that the USB settings on the device you are trying to flash GrapheneOS onto probably don't matter, because that device should be in the bootloader when plugged in.

So I guess I would recommended turning the developer options master flag off on the device running the installer, and then try various options in USB preferences. I hope that helps!

de0u Thanks for the help. It's not the end of the world, I'll have to wait til I get a new laptop. Ive never had any problems installing GOS in Linux , so I'll wait and do it the 'usual' way.
