Considering installing GrapheneOS on my Pixel 4a 5G went to the website and found its "End of Life" does this mean end of life with GrapheneOS or meaning end of life with AndroidOS, I'm a newb... LOL TIA
GrapheneOS on Pixel 4a 5G
[deleted]
End of life typically means no more security or firmware updates.
macmanjimmy Google stopped tracking and fixing firmware bugs in November 2023 (https://endoflife.date/pixel). Almost certainly, threat actors have been finding firmware bugs since then, but not disclosing them, so there may be quite a portfolio out there.
GrapheneOS is focused on security and privacy. Once the firmware underneath GrapheneOS is unsafe, running GrapheneOS on that device is much less safe than it was, and below the standards of the GrapheneOS project. That is why the project has been describing the 4a (5G) as "shouldn't be used anymore" since December 2023.
As of now, the GrapheneOS project is still fixing some non-firmware bugs to support users of the 4a (5G) while they transition to newer, supported devices (for example, the Pixel 9 series may be coming out soon). But GrapheneOS releases for EOL devices do not continue forever. Once GrapheneOS stops fixing 4a (5G) bugs, if one must deploy a 4a (5G), it might be best to install DivestOS instead of GrapheneOS.
Please note that I do not speak for the GrapheneOS project.
