Scoped Storage - not working with music player

I installed the Simple Music Player, but for some reason, when I try to give it access to the Music folder using Scoped Storage, it doesn't see the music files in that folder. It only works when I give it the actual Music/Audio permission. Any idea why this is, or do you have a suggestion for a better app perhaps?

I had a similar issue in the past with photos. The 3rd party gallery app just couldn't see the photos despite having access. I fixed it by using the files app. I just found one picture in the Pictures folder, opened it with the gallery app, then suddenly the gallery app figured it out and displayed all the pictures, including pictures in sub-folders.

you may try Vinyl, works fine in that option

FWIW, I was able to setup VLC with scoped storage. Ultimately, I had to select "internal storage" from within VLC to finalize what scoped storage to use.
