What exactly does the "Lockdown" option do? You can see it when long pressing the power button.

Locks your phone while disabling biometrics so your phone is more secure against potential attackers.

Does lockdown mode bring phone to BFU even if it was in AFU mode when it was initiated or is a reboot always required to get to BFU?

locked as far as I know, it doesn't achieve BFU state. It just disables biometrics. The phone needs to be rebooted to attain BFU status. I would be glad to be corrected if this is wrong information.

Lockdown does not take you to BFU as can be seen by apps still being active. Messenger apps will still provide notifications which is only possible if user data is available due to the device being in AFU state.

Before First Unlock (BFU) means user data is encrypted and unavailable.

After first unlock (AFU) means encryption keys are in memory and user data is available to the operating system.

Secondary users can be put back into BFU state with the device running by using 'end session' option from the power button menu or the lockscreen. To get owner user to BFU requires a device restart.
