Lukas Will this forum ever support logging in and signing up with passkeys?

"Ever" is a long time, so if asked to bet I would likely pick "yes".

Lukas Also, is there any reason why passkeys aren't yet supported?

There is still a lot of forum posts about passkeys not working even when administered by large companies with paid staff. If passkeys were to add administrative load to the small volunteer staff of this forum I don't think that would be good.

Perhaps somebody here has experience deploying passkey support to Flarum and can weigh in?

Lukas If passkeys eventually become successful in the public eye (which is currently very unclear if they will be, especially considering the far from ideal rollout of passkey support on Android), it's highly likely that Flarum will support them eventually. If this was implemented right now I think it would mean increasingly spending time on answering user questions on why they cannot make it work on their devices (again, I'm referring to Google's flawed rollout on Android).

fid02 For instance, setting up and signing in with a passkey on a Google account is buggy – even on stock PixelOS – and has been so for weeks. For instance, opening the Play Store on PixelOS, going to account settings and tapping on the buttons for registering a passkey does nothing, even on a fresh factory reset with up-to-date versions of Play Services. Try the same in Chrome on the same OS, and you'll have the same issue. You have to use a desktop computer to register the passkey. The issue goes away and then later reappears, for an unknown reason. It's illustrative of how little maintenance goes into Google's passkey functionality.

Oh, and you want to use a third-party passkey manager in Chrome on Android 14? Well then, you'll have to change one or more flags in chrome://flags because the feature is still experimental. Oh, it broke in a new Chrome version? Mate, you need to change a different flag now.

    It's almost a joke.

Hate Apple as much as you want, but man their TouchID keyboard with passkey support is so convenient. I wouldn't think it would be too hard for them to rollout with W11 and Android...oh well

fid02 I'm using passkeys with Proton Pass and they're amazing, never had any issues.

Lukas That is great. Does it also work out-of-the-box in Brave on Android? Or Chrome? Or what about chromium on Fedora Kinoite 40.XX.XX? And so on.

My point is that there are lots of scenarios to support. Passkey support is shaky on various platforms. It's going to take a long while until FIDO2 is nicely supported among all platforms in a user-friendly way.

Passkeys on GrapheneOS is one thing. But people are not only using this forum from their mobile devices. Do we want to spend time assisting users with setting up passkeys across all desktop operating systems? With all the various issues that entails?

fid02 It depends on the user, I guess. I'm personally not comfortable logging into my password manager on any desktop OS, so yeah.
