Transitioning from GPS to no google at all

When I first started using GOS I set it up with GPS for an easier transition from stock Android. I'm more comfortable with GOS now, though, and want to remove Google from my phone altogether. My question is: what is the best way to get rid of GPS? Is just uninstalling it enough? Or should I flash GOS again and start over?

If you are a Protonmail user the app "You Have Mail" does a great job of checking for new activity. Super easy on the battery.

Yep regular uninstall is plenty, the whole Google Play suite are just ordinary apps after all. Keep in mind GmsCompatConfig is not Google but a simple config file that becomes active when Google Play is running, it's fully intended to be there. Also some apps (Signal comes to mind) may need a re-install to pick up lost functionality again where applicable, like notifications.

spring-onion Thanks! So as long as an app is still functioning, there's no need to re-install it from a different source? After removing GPS, does it matter whether the Brave browser, for example, was downloaded from the Play Store? Would it be better for any reason to re-install it from, say, Github?

If you want to be able to update Brave (or any app) without GPS, then yeah. Github versions will, in most cases, be different APKs (with different keys) from the GPS versions meaning that attempts to update will be rejected due to mismatch in signatures.
