Whatsapp notifications delayed

For the last 6 months or so, since I started using it, I've been having an ongoing issue with whatapps notifications being delayed anywhere from 5 minutes to never showing up.
I do not have any google play services installed. I do not want to install them, I like a very minimalistic phone with basically just calls and texts/signal and nothing much else.
Whatsapp has background usage enabled.

I only use it for work. So I do need it to work well.

Any suggestions to fix this? I see older topics last year people were having the same issue.

Check if battery optimization is activated
Go to settings, apps, WhatsApp, app battery usage
Check if allow background usage is switched on
Then tip on the text, not the switch
You enter a hidden config site
Check there that it's set to unrestricted
Maybe that helps

whatsapp needs sandboxes Google Play in order to work properly.

AFAIK it doesnt. It has its own, reasonably good, push messaging service which is used if Play Services is not present

Strange, it did not work well for me without it. Regardless, even if it uses web sockets or another push method, it's likely to not be as reliable as Google Play Services, hence, it will consume you battery much quicker.

Ive never used it but I hear it does not give heavy battery drain.
IIRC you used to have to enable their independent push notification feature in the settings somewhere in WhatsApp. Not sure if this is still the case?
