I've been using Magic Earth and Organic Maps for navigation on my phone for a while. My wife still uses Google Maps, but could probably handle the switch to Magic Earth at this point, as it's been getting better. We're both using GrapheneOS.
Unexpectedly, we're getting a new Ford, with Android Auto support, and 3 years of service with Ford's on board navigation system. We've literally never even had a car with Bluetooth even, so I wanted to get an idea of what other like-minded people do before I jumped in blind. Obviously since my wife and I will both be using the car, I'm going to have to make some compromises for the sake of usability and convenience.
I know at the very least, we'll want to connect to the car's Bluetooth to play music, but I understand if I install Android Auto in the Graphene Apps store, we'd be able to use navigation from apps on our phone on the car's display, but all this will come with privacy cost.
I'm basically seeing 3 options:
1) At the very least, we will be connecting via Bluetooth to play music. If there's a compelling reason, we could just leave it at that, and do navigation on our phones as we have been (Magic Earth, Organic Maps, etc.).
2) Another option would be to still stick with just Bluetooth for music, but start using the Ford on board navigation system, without Android Auto. Anyone here have any experience with this, or opinions on it? I'm obviously trying to balance usability and privacy, considering my wife will be using this frequently, and it's going to be a tough sell if the interface is terrible, but is it a more private option than using Android Auto?
3) Third option would be to use Android Auto. Since we will be connecting to the car via Bluetooth for music anyway, would this be much worse, privacy wise, than the other two options? This would, I believe, allow us to use Magic Earth on the car's display, as well as some other functionality we may or may not use. Would there be a good way to leverage a work profile with Shelter, to provide some isolation, while still getting the conveniences of Android Auto?
Any input, thoughts, or suggestions are welcome. Thanks!
