Does anybody here have an opinion regarding the Hermit Lite Apps Browser?

I’m mainly just looking into it as a privacy-focused alternative frontend sort of thing for apps that have no FOSS client apps like Discord or Tumblr.

Tumblr has priviblr but the functionality is massively reduced. In contrast, some instances of invidious allowed you to create invidious accounts that you could use to subscribe to channels, and Libretube has this ability as well.

I keep hearing about PWA's, but I don't think Discord has one of those either, or it sucks, because it really doesn't perform well, and it always just opens in a new tab in Vanadium when I add a Vanadium home screen shortcut to it, as opposed to, say, Ventusky (which is the only PWA Vanadium shortcut I have that seems to work the way its supposed to.)

The FOSS alternative is NativeAlpha, but it hasn't been updated since Nov 2022, so I'm a bit cagey about using it. If it was actively maintained, I'd be much happier with it... I'd be interested in hearing about any maintained alternatives to something like this, or indeed simply some FOSS client apps for Discord and Tumblr that actually work, are FOSS, and are actively maintained.

I know there are Discord app mods but they only work on a really really old version of the Discord app, and you still need to have the discord app itself.

(I'm still trying to teach myself how to use rethibkDNS for local filtering only to block specific tracker ping URLs for Discord and Proton and whatever so I can use the mullvad app for VPN and DNS to minimize the uniqueness of my fingerprint. I suspect that is probably going to be the best option, I'm just looking at all options available so I can make an informed decision.)

I suppose the Hermit LAB's sandboxing is probably redundant with GOS's Per-App sandboxing, but tbh I'm really just looking at it for the Lite Apps themselves, not so much the sandboxing.

Then its probably not the best idea to use something which also isn't FOSS (for a hilariously moronic reason).

I also find their "anti-Google" stance a bit odd. Assuming they're using Chromium, making a deal out of Chrome being owned by Google and even Firefox being funded by Google doesn't make a lot of sense (see "Ad supported"). Then there's the fact that its an Android app, which on Stock OS doesn't have the sandboxing of GPlay like GOS. And also, they don't even try to separate themselves from GPlay, they could offer an APK download from their website but they seem happy to depend on GPlay. Of course it goes without saying that I can't say for certain how private/Google-free this does or doesn't make Hermit, but personally I wouldn't trust it.

It seems to me the best course of action regarding apps like Discord/Tumblr is either to accept using them logged in on Vanadium, or instal them in a separate user profile as typically recommended. But if you wish to use Hermit, then the choice is yours.

Yeah their flimsy excuse for not being FOSS definitely made me second-guess harder than if they simply hadn’t even mentioned it at all
