Are Virgin Plus phones locked in canada?

im looking to upgrade my phone from the S22 to a pixel 8pro for graphene os and im not sure if the pixel 8 will be locked through my carrier (virgin plus)

Any phone you buy in Canada is carrier unlocked.
Check with Virgin Plus to see when it can be unlocked but I suspect they will not unlock it until they get their money's worth.

In general it is safer to get a "factory unlocked" non-carrier phone from a non-carrier source. This differs by county and carrier.

I purchased my 8 Pro through the bigbox store BxxxBxx. It was in stock and ready to pick up within hours of ordering. Price was fairly competitive. No worries. I use Virgin, but went the guaranteed-unlocked route.

That is very much not a rule. For example, these days pretty much all Verizon Wireless phones are carrier-unlocked, but none of them are OEM-unlockable (zero of them, ever).

Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and just ordered an unlocked one I didn't want to take the chance.
