Feedback from new GOS user

Got my Pixel 6a and directly flashed GOS. Here are my first impressions:

1) eSIM activation

This wasn't possible, because it will scan a QR code (which I don't have, provider fraenk). Had to reflash original firmware and activating eSIM there. After back to GOS works there too.

2) missing localizations

All GOS specific settings are English only. Same with the GOS apps and the PlayStore. Is localization planned or already done, and I can help to translate into German?

3) dark themes missing

Contacts and sms apps missing dark theme. Sms also warns that Android 13 is to new and may not work. Installed Simple SMS and Contacts as workaround.

4) quick settings / power menu on lockscreen

Is there a setting to disable this for lockscreen? Should be only for info and unlock, nothing else.

Can be improved if people volunteer and contribute to the project. While we understand this would be beneficial the core dev team are constantly fighting an uphill battle maintaining OS integrity. To help make this happen sooner please consider a donation at https://grapheneos.org/donate so that we can help fund such improvements where contributors aren't forthcoming.

3) dark themes missing

Contacts and SMS are maintained AOSP apps which will only get dark themes when AOSP update them to have them. It takes too much dev time away from the main focus and constantly moving goalposts of maintaining privacy/security to add it and maintain them. They will regress every time AOSP changes something.

4) quick settings / power menu on lockscreen

No system function quick settings can be altered via the lockscreen without unlocking. Non security related features such as Torch are the only ones that work. Being able to power off via the lockscreen is a security benefit/retains security of data by returning to an at rest and encrypted First Boot state.

Also interested to translate it in Russian. But AFAIK apps just don't support localization strings at the moment. In the Camera app English one just hardcoded: https://github.com/GrapheneOS/Camera/blob/main/app/src/main/res/values/strings.xml

Not hardcoded, I was wrong. It's relatively easy to translate, I've prepared the PR: https://github.com/GrapheneOS/Camera/pull/316
