no bubble notifications for messages

cant seem to get bubbled notifications for stock messaging app to work. have bubbles turned on in notification settings and all conversations are allowed to bubble in app settings. I think it has something to do with draw over other apps permission but I can't enable that for messaging as it has never asked for it. thank you!

They don't work for me either and searching in the Matrix chat, others have reported theirs don't work either.

Have you tried in the owner profile?

also can't get the "conversation widget" to work either. thinking this may be related?

I am using the main profile, I only have one profile currently.

Actually, I was curious about this and found there are more issues on Android affecting bubble notifications. GrapheneOS devs have an issue open for a related problem. The related issue is with Android on Google's end, which is called an "upstream" issue. This means it affects more than just GrapheneOS. When Google issues a fix, it should be merged in to GrapheneOS. Hopefully this semi-related issue's fix will fix your problem too.
