Does anyone have any recommendations for decent News apps on GrapheneOS? I already have RSS type apps like Feeder. Looking for replacements for Apple News and Breaking News apps I use on iOS

Ground news is pretty cool. Not really a privacy option though. Rss is the only real way for a private experience I think.

Use a foss Reddit app like Red Reader and pin /r/news. Reddit is one of the most transparent news sources and completely unbiased.

There's also Ground News. Its not Open Source but it's free and it shows you the bias of the sources you're looking at.

Hb1hf I'm not advocating the use of r/news one way or the other, but hold on there. When compared to say, a self curated rss feed as another poster mentioned, how can a news feed like r/news possibly be bias? It's random news from random sources. Its the opposite of bias. Curating your own news feed is inherently bias, for example. A news feed curated on your behalf is bias, for example. A random selection from multiple sources on the other hand, can't be bias.

Just at first glance, its safe to say there's a fairly strong corporate bias. One of the rules of r/news is no paywalls, which basically crosses out a lot of alternative, non-corporate news sources that rely on being consumer-funded. This is evident simply by scrolling the subreddit, where most of the posts are (you guessed it) from mainstream, corporate sources.

mmmm Maybe you can randomize which submissions you can see, but I think people post submissions based on their expectations of an article's popularity (read: a headline's popularity). And that depends on many biases. People whose attitudes are maligned or dismissed in the comment sections tend to unsubscribe, for instance. Many sources (especially those that are very close to truly unbiased) will be under-represented. But as far as getting a handle on the Zeitgeist goes, you can do a lot worse than Reddit.

I just did a search for r/news and found many posts talking about how r/news is blocking people and censoring topics. If this were a true unbiased source of news all news articles would be allowed in with only spam, racist, homophobic, etc being banned.

Dumdum well yes corporate bais. I was actually not considering that (the op mentioned apple news, so i imagined corporate bias isn't something that concerns them). I was working on political bias and filter bubbles which are the big problems with mainstream news aggregators. R/news has all of that same mainstream content, but it isn't filtered by ones own bias.

If were talking corporate bias then the only option is carefully considered rss feeds.

I do not use an app for news. I read news from carefully selected weblinks that I know are tailored for my interests and liking, via Vanadium and no javascript. Pages can be saved for later reading by sharing, print as pdf. There is no article prefetching as in RSS readers, I simply open links I am interested in. I do not collect articles, this is the simplest method for me to catch up on what is happenning in science, tech, politics etc. No Google Play, FOSS app and no JS means hardly (if) any tracking and analytics.

However the op was looking for something to swap apple news with, and the poster that suggested r/news suggested it with that in mind, I assume.

I just disagreed with the fact that someone else said its 100% biased. However in saying this I was largely considering the bias of the person consuming the news, the OP. In this case r/news will have far less personal bias, if any at all, than either apple news or a (badly) created RSS feed, which the op was basing their question around.

Pew Research is pretty reliably considered least biased and extremely factual.

If you want "just the facts, ma'am," its probably hard to do any better than Pew.

Its also nonprofit and Non-Gov. Probably pretty American-centric, tho.

router99 Restricting spam isn't a bias. Spam is spam, not some kind of censorship issue. Restricting hate speech isn't a bias, its a legal requirement in many countries.

This thread is derailed. The op is after a news app, not a free speech news discussion forum devoid of regulations because 'censorship'.

OP, give Ground News a try. It will give you headlines and a choice of articles to review. Its a solid choice if you're looking to replace Apple News.
