I just upgraded from an old lcd phone, and discovered the features and drawbacks of an oled phone.
- You can save a lot of battery power by having the dark theme on, but mainly during the day when the brightness is highest. In low brightness, the dark theme doesn't help much with battery.
- At night in a dark room, if I set the brightness to lowest, GooglePixel's oled looks bad. It has a "color gradient", and with a dark background, the text darkens every time I scroll.
So here is my solution:
- During the day, I put the phone on the highest brightness, and turn on dark theme.
- At night, I put the phone on the lowest brightness, with night light, and extra dim, but turn off dark theme. Turning off the dark theme offsets much of the low brightness oled problems, and lets me continue to see the screen better at a lower brightness.
It's counter intuitive, but dark theme works best during the day, not at night.
