custard In theory, would android automotive be amenable to being swapped out to run an alternative OS?
Offhand I doubt the car manufacturers leave their bootloaders unlocked.
custard With regards electric vehicles - they are hugely privacy invasive.
So are modern non-electric vehicles.
custard A common retort to this is 'just buy a 10 year old ICE'. In 10-15 years ICE vehicles will be phased out and all that will be left is EVs with privacy invasive tech. How does one drive an EV with privacy?
Maybe in five or ten years there will be a privacy backlash. Maybe some manufacturers will offer more privacy, and/or maybe some governments will require some privacy.
If just one rich person decided to buy a struggling EV company (Rivian?) and make privacy-respecting cars, that might turn the tide.
Overall, the issue is privacy, not the powertrain. There are invasive ICE cars, and privacy-respecting EVs would be easy.
