Use alternative store while having Play Store installed?

Assuming one is already using Google Play Services/Google Play Store for some apps, is there any reason not to just use Google Play store for all apps (assuming they’re available)? Is there any benefit in installing apps like Signal (that are also available in the Play Store) through something like Obtainium while already having the Play store installed anyway?
Any downsides in terms of notifications working/not working or batter drainage etc?

Joeorange2 some developers release slightly different apps on GitHub than they do on Google Play. Sometimes developers make it obvious in the README.md in the repository or even allow users to download the Google Play versions from GitHub, others don't. Oftentimes, in my experience, the apks on GitHub are the FOSS versions. But that's just my observation, not the rule.

But sometimes the apps are the same. If the apps are the same (and you've confirmed that), I don't see any point in downloading an app from Obtainium if you're already using Google Play.
