Questions regarding internet connections by apps

Can an app access the internet when it is closed? I only want apps to connect to the internet when it is opened. I don't want apps to detect that I am changing the VPN servers that I connect.

Also, does secondary profiles make a connection to the GrapheneOS servers?

I turn on Airplane mode, disable Wi-Fi and then change VPN app. Then re-enable.

If you want to prevent a specific app from accessing Internet for a short while, you can either temporarily revoke Network permission or disable the app (which prevents it from running).

You could use some kind of firewall app. I think Rethink DNS has the kind of functionality youre looking for, but I have only just really heard of it myself so I'm not sure about the why's how's and what's of it.

As already stated you can just disable the app. There is no reason to have an app running that your not using (unless your relying on notifications obviously).

tango you can but its not very elegant. With the firewall part of rethink, I believe one can automatically revoke network access when not in use, on an app to app basis, for example.

I guess its an individual choice. It might be a good enough app but in my opinion is not needed on GOS. It will also make you stand out more whereas using Mullvad/Proton/IVPN with their own DNS one is blending in with a lot of other users.

tango I dont mean the DNS aspect of the app - I believe you can just use an on device firewall within the app. You can block individual apps or ip addresses or what have you, on either or both WiFi and cellular. It seems to be like lulu or little snitch, and if thats the case it could be very powerful. As I said, I know very little about it. I only heard about the app the other day and I have yet to play with it.
