I recently read an article (linked below) about the major carriers in the USA selling their customer location data to several entities. They were fined (slap on the wrist) by the FCC and most still waited up to a year before they allegedly stopped the practice. My assumption is there is/will be some loop hole they exploit to continue selling this lucrative location data.
While I am aware that your phone is trackable via a few mechanisms, I wanted to explore if it is worth using a non-kyc SIM card for data only purposes and then utilizing voip services such as jmp.chat for all legacy calls/sms. I understand that the carrier will still know the location history via cell tower pings of IMEI = xxx and SIM card = yyy.
However, I imagine most marketers/others who buy the location data from these cell providers want to use the publicly known phone numbers of individuals (from social media contact uploads for example) to search for individuals location information. Similarly, lets say someone wants to hire a PI to find where you were at a given date/time, they would likely know your publicly known phone number, but not your IMEI number.
So is there sufficient value in dealing with the additional costs/headaches of using VOIP numbers exclusively and giving up usage of your SIM card for phone/sms (which is often unlimited, at least in the USA)? Would love to hear thoughts around this!
