Using Telegram on Graphene..

Apologies in advance for my ignorance, I'm still slowly learning :)

Hi - I've done sufficient research to decide that Graphene is the most attractive custom OS for my needs - I was thinking of just getting Lineage due to the wider array of phone options..but decided that forking out a little extra money for a Pixel is worth it.

HOWEVER, Telegram is one of the apps that ill need to use. I know its far from a popular choice for many here, but for the moment I'll need to be using it (will be making the switch to Signal soon). I've read that the FOSS version of telegram works fine..but if I'm understanding this correctly, it is technically a separate app to Telegram itself, a modified version of sorts.

Does this mean my current and usual telegram account can't be used for the FOSS version, and I'd have to make an entirely new account and only be able to communicate with people who also use this version of the app?

This wouldn't be an option for me at the moment, so what alternative is there? Does the official Telegram work still work on Graphene without issues, and how would I go about downloading and using it?

soon404 I used it earlier this spring without issue and switched from the 'X' version (is that the FOSS one?) to the regular without problem.

So if nothing has changed since then, yes it works fine.

You can use your regular Telegram account with the FOSS edition.
I'm doing it this way too and it works perfect.

If I remember right, there was a problem with creating a new account with the FOSS app, using an existing account should'nt be a problem.

Correct as per the warning in the Fdroid app description.

rndmE Ahh okay that's perfect then, I'm assuming my chats & groups will remain there too with no change? Will I still be able to message users that use regular telegram and practically use it the exact same way I currently am on a regular stock android phone?

DeletedUser29 Thanks, that's encouraging to hear - what's the difference between FOSS and regular then? How do they work the same if they are "different" apps? Not sure if the question makes sense, still trying to learn 😅

soon404 Sorry, turns out I haven't used the FOSS version after all! But the official Telegram app works fine on GrapheneOS (or at least did back in March so I see no reason it shouldn't still).

I have heard of forced censorship of political groups and chats on Play Store APKs of TeleGram if Google does not approve of the content. Allegedly the solution is to download the APK directly from TG. Is this true?
