"Google Fi won't run without Google Play Services...."

I just got a Pixel 7a and installed graphene with Google play services Sandboxed and I am having all sorts of problems with services not working. Google Fi App won't work at all and gives this message "Google Fi won't run without Google Play services, which are not supported by your device"

Signal works but is constantly alerting me with the same message above

Messages works with SMS seemingly, but any group messages, or some messages from apple users don't work at all. I just get a blue "Tap to Download" circle and when I press it nothing happens.

Not sure what to do here, thanks for the help!

charris86 have you installed sandboxed Google Play in the same profile as Signal and Google Fi?

charris86 Are necessary permissions granted? Maybe the Fi app needs location permission? Were any permissions removed from any of the Google apps? Do other apps using Google services work?

i granted all permissions and still the same problem. google Maps is also behaving strangely. It will open but the map shows just a grey background and my blue location, but no other details on the map. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling both apps with no change in function.

That sounds potentially consistent with an aggressive ad blocker or other network filtering/problem. Is some network filter in use?

i just uninstalled google play services and now realize that i don't even know how to get it back lol. I might just start over from the beginning. Do you guys have a tutorial you prefer?

charris86 It doesn't sound like it was ever correctly installed. You're meant to simply install it from our app repository. Where did you install it from?

de0u not that i'm aware of, I have a physical sim, but tried turning on esim support which didn't make a difference. I'm not running a vpn or any special ad blockers

charris86 I didn't watch the whole video, but it looks like this person did install GrapheneOS correctly using the web installer, then installed Google Play correctly using the GrapheneOS Apps app, but after that they just started changing permissions for all sorts of apps. One app was Google Play Services which they disabled the network permission for. Google Play Services, I'm betting, would need access to the internet for Google Fi to work.

Also, they changed permissions for all sorts of other apps that I'd suggest not modifying, like the phone app, messaging, etc. Basically, don't change permissions for any apps unless you were the one to install them.

If you also changed permissions for random apps that you didn't install yourself, then you might just want to factory reset your phone and start over again.

CognitivelyDissonant I never tried it, but after searing online quickly it appears it does do that as well as some other things, like enable disabled apps.

I don't know if it will reset permissions added by GrapheneOS. The network permission isn't added by GrapheneOS, but for all I know that one won't be reset. Or it might. If you try resetting that way, I'm curious to know if network is reset.
