What options are there for Japanese text input and/or keyboard?

jacobb I use Gboard, although I would prefer a FOSS alternative. I haven’t yet found one that’s mature enough. The most promising seems to be FlorisBoard in the future.

I don't use Gboard but I have just installed Heliboard which I believe is a fork of Gboard.

Heliboard is a fork of OpenBoard.

Gboard is Google's proprietary keyboard and can only be installed from the Play Store or websites like apkmirror.

Nothing special is required, just choose Japanese as the input language in Gboard.

That probably also explains the lack of Japanese input.

I haven't tried it but this seems to be a FOSS app that supports Asian languages including Japanese:

Edit: though the F-Droid and Play Store versions don't mention Japanese and the Github page says it works via a plugin. I don't know how you would add that plugin, hopefully that doesn't mean you need to compile it yourself...

You need to install two files:

Fcitx5 for Android
Fcitx5 for Android (Anthy plugin)
