Unreliable Whatsapp push notifications

Hi all. I've been using GrapheneOS for a week now and I have the need to use Whatsapp. I installed it with the apk on their website using obtainium. Before installing it, I made some research and I figured Whatsapp uses a different method to deliver push notifications when Google Play Services are not installed. It works fine for a while but after some time, notifications stop working properly. I also set unrestricted under battery settings for Whatsapp. Am I missing something? Thanks!

Cornbread2260 I can confirm notifications got worse recently, I keep missing calls regularly and message notifications are not as swift as they used to be. No sandboxed Google here. Still usable and lighter on battery than say Signal.

Cornbread2260 @[deleted] I can also confirm that notifications for Whatsapp have become wonky recently. I will see the notification alert at the top of my screen but no banner displays, nor will any alert sound.

As far as I understand, if the app is still running in the background, you will receive the notifications. But if it has been "turned off" by the system, you will no longer receive them because Whatsapp expects that Google wakes it up when receiving a notification. An alternative system exists but is not implemented by Whatsapp. So you have no alternative to Google.

I am also having a lot of problems with WhatsApp notifications, especially incoming calls not ringing.

There weren't any problems with two devices I manage with GOS + WhatsApp (owner profile, without Play Services, unrestricted battery use) until the upgrade to Android 15.

Now, the users won't be notified for hours about new messages and no ringtone will be played when they're called via WhatsApp.

It might have to do with some under the hood changes of Android 15, but this is merely correlation from my end.

Hi guys, I joined to share (probably covered elsewhere by now though).

I also was not receiving WhatsApp call notifications but I was receiving text notifications.
I changed battery to "App battery usage: unrestricted". Still not calls.

Then I enabled "Exploit protection compatibility mode", call notifications now come through whether on phone or locked.

btw I have no gplay or sand boxed play installed.
