Default directory makes sense, but it sounds like maybe you are not using the right tool for the job. If you are looking for a more power-user experience with file browsing, I recommend MiXplorer or FX. Spiritual successors to the venerable ES of lore. Solid is a good FOSS alternative but it is not as feature rich or usable IMO.
As far as I'm concerned the built in Files app does what it needs to do, and adding file creation would be pointless without a text editor, but then you will just continue to snowvall into "well it needs this too". flYhose added features would just overlap with dedicated power-user apps and would likely end up being inferior too, so this does not add much value to the user. You can already bounce off of the Files app into other app activities, lessening the need for features like this even more...
