Homescreen briefly visible when switching users

After the latest update, whenever I switch users the "new" profile's homescreen is briefly visible before the lockscreen shows up.

Is this being tracked or are there any recommended fixes?

This is one of a few multiple user switching bugs in AOSP that have been about for a while now. Hopefully Google will fix them soon.

Also, do you have links to the upstream bug reports? If you don't have them on hand then don't worry about it and I can try to find them myself.

GrapheneOS authoritatively decided to build on open software AOSP as its base.

Software defects in its chosen base are therefore just as much the GrapheneOS project's problem to deal responsibly with, as millions of other software projects and distros have to properly deal with their chosen libraries and software components all the time.

It is ridiculous (and boring) how this project is always pointing fingers instead of taking responsibility for its fundamental design decisions.

If AOSP is such a problem, then GrapheneOS made a poor decision and should make a new one, just as other software applications do all the time.

To me it seems like "multiple profiles" feature is not at all a priority for Google (as not many users are using it on "classic" Android in contrast to GrapheneOS users).

Also wondering, since AOSP is open source, they should accept patches from third parties as well, including GrapheneOS devs?

@ve3jlg UI quirks with multiple users are inherited by every variant of Android and are present in the stock OS. It's not something specific to GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS has multiple downstream fixes for user profile issues already. We fixed an Android 14 regression with user profiles breaking sandboxed Google Play, among others. Our focus is on development work with longer term value than fixing minor AOSP issues before they fix it themselves. We only prioritize fixing upstream bugs that are non-trivial regressions or that are severe issues. These UI quirks have been around for years and are definitely not a recent regression but rather the feature has always had quirks when switching profiles or especially ending the current session. They're working on fixing these issues themselves and we've filed multiple issues which have been resolved. In many cases, issues were widely known for years and only got fixed after we reported it as minor security issue. The assumption they're aware of each variant of the issues is wrong. They've fixed a lot of it already, including recent improvements. Sometimes the privacy and security fixes cause regressions such as the regressions in Android 14 due to them fixing leaks of installed packages across users.

There are likely at least a billion people using an Android-based OS with multiple user support enabled. Any one of those people could have decided to work on improving the secondary user feature. It's an open source project. It's very strange to place the blame for these UI quirks specifically on the small team of GrapheneOS developers. We didn't design or implemented this feature. Many Android OEMs have multiple user support enabled since it's enabled by default. Stirring up trouble based on the remaining multiple user UI quirks is not going to accomplish anything. They've fixed most of them and we have some of our own fixes implemented. We're aware there are remaining issues, and we're also aware that they're working on improving it further. The fixes sometimes cause regressions so one issue goes away but another one shows up. The design of the feature is inherently prone to these System UI quirks and it's going to take time for it to finish maturing. They don't highly prioritize it, which is why it's taking so long for all the issues to be fully resolved, but they are working on it and most of the issues are resolved.

GrapheneOS while do agree about important long term fixes over small quick ui fixes. Waiting on google is like watching egg hatch. I have not had a wallpaper on my secondary profile since got pixel 7 pro over year ago. The stretch bug never fixed by them and they seem not care about their "flagship" phone at the time (this just one of many many small ui bugs). Yes i could resize my picture every time want to.set wallpaper but that is rediculous. I wouldn't get a pixel again. Google is as usual incapable of properly supporting their own hardware despite having legions of workers.

gosrox I also have the wallpaper stretching issue. I also wish it were fixed, but I would never expect the GrapheneOS developers to fix it.

I don't know if you know anything about programming, but I've looked through lots of Android code. To find what's causing the issue, then fixing it, then testing the fix, then maintaining it if upstream changes break it is not a small task. Way too much work for small UI issues that can be worked around.

Yes this. Also Google may release a fix at any time for these. Most likely in a Quarterly Platform Release QPR or with a new Android version. Then we have to throw all our work away and switch to Googles fix instead as their fix will be maintained in AOSP saving us that ongoing work. We have a tiny team compared to Google and have to carefully prioritise our work.
