At the beginning of the year, I "de-googled" my Pixel 7 Pro by installing GrapheneOS. I was able to migrate away from most Google services to alternatives, many self-hosted. The notable exception being YouTube and YouTube Music, as I have a Premium Family plan for that. I even changed my phone number. I setup voice communication with my main carrier on the eSIM for data only (no one ever gets that phone number); I have a physical SIM with a set number of monthly minutes and SMS texts for businesses and financial institutions that I legitimately use; and I have a VOIP number that I have given to family and friends. Unfortunately, getting a new phone number just means a new to you phone number, not a new number. So, you're inheriting whatever baggage comes with that number, which leads me to my pain point.
One thing that has been annoying is the absence of some of the features that come with the Google Dialer app. For one, the Google Dialer is very smart about spam calls. I assume that the phone number of incoming calls is routed through a list of known spamming numbers which allows the dialer to apply the Spam label to the call. You can also set it up to screen calls on your behalf before the call is passed on to you. Obviously, this drastically reduces the number of interruptions experienced by your phone ringing, but it comes at the price of allowing Google to have a hand in every phone call made with its dialer. The second thing that Google's Dialer provides is caller ID, which provides the name of the business calling. This allows me to make a better decision about whether or not I should think about answering that call.
As it stands now, I ignore all calls coming from the data-only and business number. I figure if it's important, they'll leave a voice mail, and I can call them back. However, if you're expecting a call from a business, then it would be beneficial to know that it's them calling, allowing you to connect with them when they have availability, rather than calling back later when they might not be able to talk. What are others doing on their GrapheneOS phones to improve the dialer app experience?
