Assigning Individual Icons in Theme

Hi all,

Despite it still being in beta, I'm really enjoying GrapheneOS's themed icon pack.

I was wondering if there's any way to associate apps not included in the pack with icons that I know are in the pack. For instance, I use a custom version of the Instagram APK. The icon pack doesn't recognize this as Instagram, so it just shows the normal Instagram logo. But I know the theme includes the Instagram logo, because I saw the themed version when I had normal Instagram installed.

It might not be possible, but I figured it's worth an ask. Thanks!

What icon pack are you talking about? I'm unaware of any official icon pack.

On a side note, what are you trying to achieve by using a custom version of that app? It's recommended that you do not install apps from unofficial sources. If you would like to use Instagram, my recommendation would be to install their native app, or to use their PWA. If you don't want your Instagram app to be be able to interact with other apps on your device, you could consider installing it in a separate user profile.

treequell I would like to potentially suggest that there are many use cases one would want to use unofficial builds of an app. For example, telegram, has many different unofficial builds utilizing the telegram API, that have beefed up or improved security or privacy features.

That being said, neither myself nor the graphene OS team has any specific recommendations and it is on the end user to do their due diligence and research to make sure that it fits within their security model before installing. If you would like to ask questions about a particular app, feel free but we are unable to make recommendations

Themed icons are not an icon pack from GrapheneOS, but a upstream feature from AOSP that works much the same way on stock Pixel OS.

It's up to app developers to include in their app the ability for their app icon to be customized as per the themed icon requirements in AOSP.

If an app you are using does not support themed icons, then you can ask the developers of that app to do so. Information about how to do that is well documented by Google: https://developer.android.com/develop/ui/views/launch/icon_design_adaptive.
